Super Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius ♐️ May 26, 2021

This full moon is a supermoon and total lunar eclipse. This is the third of four supermoons in 2021, all happening right in a row – and this one is the closest and largest of the year! A supermoon can be a full moon or new moon, occurring when the moon is at perigee or within 90% of perigee (the point at which the moon is nearest to the earth in her monthly orbit).
The May full moon is called the Flower Moon. It is sometimes also called the Hare Moon, Corn Planting Moon, or Milk Moon. On full moons, Luna rises at sunset, peaks at midnight and sets at sunrise – and this is true all over the world, no matter your time zone. When the sun goes down, this is our cue to head outside and see the moon rising majestically in the east.
Eclipses can be full or partial. The earth’s shadow consists of two parts: the shadow cast directly behind the earth is called the umbra, and the fainter, fan-like shadow surrounding the umbra is the penumbra. This full moon is a total (or umbral) eclipse, something we haven’t seen since the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius of May 2020. Umbral eclipses provide the classic lunar eclipse experience, with the moon turning deep crimson. Lunar eclipses are often called blood moons due to this change in color. Moon gazers in Australia, southeast Asia, western South America, and western North America will have the best view. Click here for awesome graphics and more information about this eclipse.
Visualize the earth hovering between the moon and the sun, all in a 180 degree line – this is the planetary configuration at each month’s full moon. Whenever the earth hangs between two planets – as it does at every full moon each month – we have an astronomical/astrological “opposition.” The supermoon lunar eclipse in Sagittarius is an examination of the Gemini-Sagittarius opposition, and all the ways in which these archetypes complement one another.
Gemini and Sagittarius: the axis of seekers and ramblers. This lunar eclipse brings movement, adventure, teaching, and learning. We are all teachers and students. What are you here to teach? What are you here to learn? The centaur archer sends bow after fiery bow into the darkness of uncertainty. Sagittarian fire energy is so expressive and boisterous that we are taken up, out, toward the light and one another, drawn into communion with our neighbors. It is time to reconnect. It is time to dance down the mountain path. It is time to sing and loosen the body.
Sagittarius is incredibly raw and candid. Under this influence, it is impossible to hide or pretend. There are no secrets. Sagittarius opens up the throat chakra so wide that those who love or live with a Sagittarius know that one of their signature personality traits is saying the first thing that comes to mind without thinking. This lunar eclipse is similarly a force of exposure, rolling in like fire.
At this full moon lunar eclipse last year, I traveled south to attend a big bonfire with old and new farm friends, including many feisty Sagittarians. It was the Strawberry Moon. Together we ate fresh strawberries and drank effervescent strawberry kombucha. It was a joyous and energetic eclipse, with laughter racing the sparks up into the clear night sky.
Full moons are high energy and felt not just the day of, but for days before and after. It goes without saying that the supermoon + lunar eclipse combo packs a serious punch. Share, uplift, revitalize, expand – this is the centaur’s calling. Follow him into the jolly vortex. Fan the flames with Sagittarius Yoga. In meditation, focus on the creative sacral chakra.
