Happy birthday aliens, rebels, and freaks!
We’re nearly at the end of the zodiac wheel, arriving on cool wings in the electric wonderland of Aquarius. The skies open splendidly, cracked by the gods, ready to shower us with mind-expanding gifts. Aquarius is the last air sign in the zodiac, representing the pinnacle of all scholarly endeavors and the eternal quest for wisdom. Aquarius’ affirmation is I know.
Aquarius loves surprises. He keeps us on our toes, forever reminding us that we don’t actually know anything. Prepare for all things alternative, unorthodox, technological, and philosophical. Aquarius follows his own path, to say the least. He embodies a progressive, innovative perspective. Aquarius is cerebral, curious, and totally original. Life unfolds suddenly and spectacularly under this sun. All feels fated.
The sun is in its detriment in Aquarius, 180 degrees from Leo (the constellation ruled by the sun). Because Leo rules the ego, one might say that Aquarius rules the “anti-ego,” or collective consciousness, but this is not always true. Aquarius does safeguard the rights of humanity, but so vociferously and with such righteousness that, at a certain point, it’s no longer about the common good, it’s about whether or not he’s right.
In Aquarius’ world, everything is a battle, a call to action. The trick is learning how to channel this energy so that the battle does not become internalized, i.e. self-destructive. Balanced Aquarians are devoted to the evolution of humanity and their own personal ego. At best, Aquarians empower, uplift, and revitalize their loved ones and communities.
Aquarius is emotionally detached, aloof, torn between love of solidarity and love of solitude. The ruling planet of Aquarius is Uranus, Harbinger of the Unexpected. Consider the Greek myth of boy-turned-god Ganymede, for whom Aquarius is named:
Ganymede was a beautiful young boy from Troy, just a humble shepherd, completely unaware that the mighty god Zeus was watching him and had become enamored by his beauty. Zeus transformed into an eagle and abducted Ganymede right from his pasture. Ganymede became – against his will – a consort of Zeus, and was, out of all Zeus’ lovers, the only one to be granted immortality. Ganymede was then designated the cupbearer to the gods. We know him in astrology as Aquarius, “the water bearer.”
Ganymede’s abduction and liaison were clearly non-consensual. Is this origin story the root of Aquarian passion for social justice?
