Happy new moon and happy solar eclipse! This annular eclipse will be visible from “parts of Russia, Greenland, and northern Canada. Weather permitting, those in Northern Asia, Europe, and the United States will see a partial eclipse.” (TimeandDate.com)
Solar eclipses ask us to look at our ego. When the moon swallows the sun, the heart engulfs the ego. It’s time to ask ourselves difficult questions about who we are and who we want to be. This is happening in the charismatic constellation of Gemini. An eclipse never comes alone. A solar eclipse always arrives two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse. Two weeks before this solar eclipse, we have a super full moon lunar eclipse in Sagittarius.
The New Moon Solar Eclipse in Gemini sparkles in cleansing starlight. The twins spin like weather vanes in a cool breeze. I see blue eyes electrifying the sky. I see mercury quivering, a feather drifting aloft. I see warm nights and bare arms, laughing fairies and painted flowers.
Gemini rules close friend and sibling relations. This is one place where we can conduct a healthy examination of the ego. Gemini is very outward looking. The Gemini ego is tied to relationships and communication. Self-worth may be premised on social circles, others’ opinions, connections, community roles, etc. So from a Gemini context, or a community-oriented context, how are you doing? Who are you in your community? What kind of communication do you offer? To what extent do you share yourself with others?
Often new moons make us feel tired, but not so with Gemini. This new moon is exceptionally busy and extroverted. We can pack a lot into one day. Gemini, ruled by Mercury the Messenger, promotes conversation and brainstorming. It is time to capture our thoughts and share them with others. I always encourage my readers to channel their creative energies because I believe this is crucial for healing and processing. If you don’t consider yourself an artist, you haven’t found your medium yet. If you don’t consider yourself a writer, pick up a pen and begin free-writing. Too often we let fear of failure/mediocrity dampen our creativity.
At this new moon last year I was reviewing for oral exams in my teacher training. I spent long days reading and re-reading notes and books and emails and every little thing that I had learned. I synthesized. I collated my thoughts and knowledge and prepared to speak eloquently on these topics. I met with friends to study. And I dreamed about what was coming next: a new job, new city, new chapter in my life.
This new moon solar eclipse will form a conjunction to Mercury Retrograde in Gemini. I used to think that conjunctions to Mercury Retrograde were a good thing. I believed that other planets could help elevate Mercury and make him less shitty for everyone during the retrograde. But now I am sorry to say that I have a cynical view. Mercury seems to lower the standard for anyone who comes into contact with him during this time. So what does this mean? It means that we need to watch for miscommunication and awkward moments. Be mindful.
