Solar Eclipse in Capricorn 🐐 Dec 25, 2019

Happy new moon and happy solar eclipse!! This eclipse is known as an annular eclipse because it covers the sun’s center, but not the edges, resulting in a vivid “ring of fire” around the moon. This fiery ring will be visible to viewers in Saudi Arabia, Oman, southern India, and parts of Indonesia. Viewers in most of Asia, parts of North/East Africa, and North/West Australia will be able to see a partial eclipse.
Eclipses represent rebirth and the dawning of a new age. They suggest, by virtue of their potency, a radical shift. Something is subsumed, transmuted. This is all happening in Capricorn, the last earth sign in the trilogy. The most recent solar eclipse was in July 2019 in the sign of Cancer. As Cancer and Capricorn are opposite signs in the zodiac, these eclipses are complementary but also fundamentally different. An eclipse never comes alone. A solar eclipse always arrives two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse. Indeed, two weeks after our lovely Capricorn eclipse, we’ll have a full moon lunar eclipse “at home” in Cancer.
If it is helpful, think back to the first week of July to see which challenges surfaced at that time, because that’s what we’re revisiting now. Also think back to the first week of Jan 2019 – we had a solar eclipse in Capricorn then too.
The new moon in Capricorn introduces ideas of a practical, tangible nature. From Capricorn we learn the power of silence; work; and frugality. Capricorn encourages us to save for the future, to be pragmatic and strategic. The goat directs our attention towards self-control and self-discipline.
Some astrologers conflate Capricorn with the outdated patriarchal values and institutions so loathed by contemporary new age humans, but if we understand Capricorn only through this lens, we will never destroy old structures. Capricorn is not just the man in the suit, but also the fresh-faced architect: the first assembler of the New Earth.
So if you’re not happy, make a change; start building anew. Vacate the premises, quit your miserable job – whatever you need to do. We can make change whenever, but the longer we wait, the more complicated life becomes. New moon solar eclipses are the perfect time to begin again.
See sun and moon together. Incubate fire and water; fan their alchemical destiny. See the moon swallow the sun whole, see the wild woman reclaim her throne. Welcome this vision of the new earth.
There will be a grand total of five planets in Capricorn on the day of this new moon solar eclipse! Great news: the moon and sun will be pretty much conjunct Jupiter in Capricorn, which is such a warm, supportive and festive influence. The moon and sun will also simultaneously trine Uranus Retrograde in Taurus, yet another exciting influence. I think it will be a truly excellent holiday; both Jupiter and Uranus bring much-needed lightness to an earth-heavy event. The moon will move on to Aquarius two days later on Dec 27, dishing out the zest and funk. By Jan 1, the moon will be in Aries, gearing up for a potent quarter moon.
New moons make us feel more tired, and this is especially true with Capricorn. Here the moon is strained, in her “detriment,” opposite the sign she rules. A planet is weakest in its detriment. Removed from her warm ocean, Luna is naked and vulnerable. Watch for mood swings and unusually low energy. Your inclination to stay home is perfectly natural.
And so we creak forward inexorably, yearning for joy in the endlessness of self-work. Go outside and inhale low gray clouds. Though you may be tired, even depressed, do not forget that you are infinitely supported by the earth and she would love to see you. Visualize new sprouts popping, reaching for the sun. Connect to the earth with this image of lightness. In meditation, focus on the root chakra. Take care of yourself with Capricorn Yoga. To find your personal moon sign, click here.
