The Waning Last Quarter Moon rises at midnight, peaks at dawn, and sets at noon. Here the deeply-feeling moon in Scorpio squares the erratic Aquarian sun. This phase prepares us for the New Moon in Aquarius (Chinese New Year) on Jan 29.
Scorpio and Aquarius belong to the fixed modality. To be fixed is to be bold, decisive, full of conviction. Fixed energy in the skies calls on our strength and passion.
This moon phase is one part chaos, one part catharsis. The mind is incredibly active here, racing in the middle of the night. This is very common during Aquarius Season. There is certainly much to think about, much to consider. The brain is in solution mode.
Scorpio is the chrysalis weaver. Scorpio means transformation. In the blackest black of deadest night, our wings begin to sprout. Scorpio the hag gurgles prophecies from the muddy root of the root of the root. She takes us in, no matter how we arrive, and gently rocks us to sleep. She kisses our scars with poison lips until everything falls away.
Deep, dark Scorpio takes us on a journey now, whispering in the night: do you remember the womb, the tomb? This is where I live.
Where does Aquarius enter? The water bearer is a creature of great intellectual and creative ability, eager to explore every corner of the cosmos. He turns our head toward the sparkling future. Aquarius possesses extraordinary powers of manifestation. And now he and the scorpion work in tandem, creeping slowly toward the horizon. Aquarius leads the expedition onward while Scorpio turns over every blackened stone and log.
Scorpio rakes the coals of our psyche and emotions in a powerful way. You may feel a weight in the chest, feelings of depression, or unusual dreams. The idea for this quarter moon is that all heaviness may leave the heart, making room for all that is fresh and new and alive.
This year I will celebrate the quarter moon by visiting Frida Kahlo’s house here in Mexico City with a very dear friend of mine who was born with the moon in Scorpio <3 Going to Frida’s house is an indescribably beautiful, emotional experience. The story of her life and her pain and her art and her toxic love with Diego come to you in sensual waves within the azure walls of her home. The sun sparkles on the frog fountain in the courtyard as the tears fall freely on my face; I come to listen, to honor the deep and dark and where it meets the light.
Heads up: Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, plays a prominent role in this quarter moon. Earlier in the morning, the sun and Pluto form a conjunction. This means that the moon squares not just the sun, but also Pluto himself. Pluto’s presence indicates a major emotional apex. Something must come out. Catharsis and metamorphosis snake towards us in the deep waters. Let them in.
Drink plenty of water to honor Scorpio’s element. In meditation, focus on the solar plexus chakra. Unlock your power with Scorpio Yoga. To find your personal moon sign, click here.
